I'd say from your selection, I'd pick the 85 f/1.8G if it was for portraits. If you plan to go Nikon Z system anytime in the future, you'd have to be aware that it has the "screw drive" AF which will not work with the FTZ adapter, at least not in the current version. It has a different rendering from the newer "G" version, but is still a very nice portrait lens IMHO (from what I see on the Net, I've never owned it). The Nikkor 85 f/1.4 D was dubbed "cream machine", and for a reason. But then you say you don't want a Sigma, so that's that. It's a great lens for close-up headshots in my experience (but not as sharp as newer offerings). Problem is it's really only sharp at close ranges (at least in my experience), but has some really creamy bokeh wide open. (Samples at f/1.2: and ).Īnother lens that comes to my mind is the "old" 50mm f/1.4 HSM Sigma, before they released the "Art" version. Bokeh is not the creamiest there is but I really like it, it's got a very "old school" kind of "onion" bokeh found in some of the AI-era lenses. Why did you rule out the 50 f/1.2 Nikkor? It's a fantastic lens, extremely sharp when stopped down with a dreamy look wide open. I'm sure you know it's a manual lens, but it's becoming my favorite lens. It takes some getting used to, but the output The Nikon is a very good lens but the Voigtlander is about as good of a lensĪs you will find for the price. I can only vouch for the Voigtlander 58mm and the Nikon 85 1.8G. Used Sigma 35 or 50mm 1.4 ART lenses would be my choice The 58mm 1.4G has closer to the bokeh output that I like but it's way out of the price range to justify it. The Voigtlander and Zeiss have hard edges on the bokeh balls from the samples I've seen and I'm not totally sure about that. Prefer not to get a Sigma lens or the 50mm 1.2 Nikkor. Mostly looking for good bokeh out of the lens and decent sharpness. Manual focus isn't an issue but it might be a little harder at 85mm. So I've somewhat narrowed it down to these. I already own the 105mm DC and love the output, but it's a bit long and I'd like something I can get a little closer with. So I've done some research and wanted to get 1.4 lens that's in the mid range, but there's a lot of options at this price point and wanted to get some insight from people who may have had a couple of the lenses.
